We learned that a small size bouquets having 5-6 flowers will cost about Rs. 60 – 80 while they are sold in retail at around Rs. 120 – 160. Similarly Medium size bouquets of 12 Pink Roses with seasonal fillers wrapped in cellophane with a ribbon bow will cost around Rs. 180 while they are sold online and offline at about Rs. 349 – 399.

Similarly large size bouquets with about 20 fresh yellow roses will cost about Rs. 280 – Rs. 300 which is sold at Rs. 500 – Rs. 550 in retail market. It was bought to our notice that the prices of flowers fluctuates with change in season and also on law of demand and supply. For e.g. during the month of February the prices of red rose shoot up due to heavy demand on occasion of Valentines Day.

Lohar Chawl is the wholesale market for Electrical, Hardware, Tools, Home Appliances & Chandeliers. You can find all the items starting from a electric bulb, CFL to electric motors and lot many things. Market for these products is highly concentrated in Lohar Chawl and is divided into different lanes.

You can find small stalls to large stores selling these items. There are certain stores that sells only products of particular brand while there are some other stores that sells single product of various brands & make.

I was searching for markets that could help visitors of this blog. My mind ran through many ideas, finally I thought of writing on Abdul Rehman Street. It is also know as A. R. Street. Abdul Rehman Street Located near Marine Lines (station on western railway) is a wholesale market for School & Office Supplies. This one is close to Manish Market about which I have already written earlier.

I have been to this market many times. Its a place from where your local stationery shop keeper buys all the supplies. Products available here ranges from small pin to electronic toys. There are shops selling your school books, pencils, pens, erasers, school bags, water bottles, etc. Some store have strict rules that they don’t sell single unit of any product. These stores usually have boards on the door saying “Only Wholesale, No Retail”. They do not entertain retail clients.

One thing I discovered is that margins in stationery retail ranges anywhere between 20% – 40% which is fairly good margin as far as retail trade is concerned… I think this is why Anupam Stationery entered into retail business. To give you example a refill of Techno Tip pens cost you Rs. 3.20 while the MRP is Rs. 4, while the pen cost you Rs. 7.5 while the MRP is Rs. 10. This is not all, you also get products like water bottles, school bags, pencil box, tiffin boxes, etc. at 40% less price then what you get from your local stationery seller. I have been to Manish Market several times with my cousin with a motive to understand business of Chinese Electronic Products. This was for the first time I visited for Manzeal.

If you go to Manish Market, every time you will find different types of fancy products which are all from China. Regular products available there are Mosquito Killing Rackets, MP3 Players, Digital Displays, LCD Screens, Fancy Lights, Crockery & bone china items, etc. On the way to Manish Market, you will find a market for Hardware & other electrical products known as the Lauhar Chawl. (I will discuss about it in detail in another blog post) Other products you will find there are Air Pillows, toys, Mobile Phones, Mobile phone accessories like battery, handsfree, bluetooth doggle, bluetooth ear piece, memory card, cover, screen guard and many other fancy products which you may have not seen before.

This market is only a wholesale market. If the people in this market gauge that you are retail customer, they tend to offer you a retail price. So, only retailers who buy in bulk get a better deal. Chinese Cell Phone ranges between Rs. 1500 – Rs. 3000, with IMEI number, Mp3 player with memory card slot expandable upto 4 GB and no inbuilt memory ranges between Rs. 165 – 180, depending upon the quantity and bargaining skill you have. We bought 20 such Mp3 players @ Rs. 165 each. This Mp3 Players are sold at Rs. 300 – 450 on various e-commerce portals. Market price of Memory Cards (SD, Micro SD, etc.) is as good as oil & sugar prices, it keeps on fluctuating daily. Currently 2GB Micro SD card is available at Rs. 220.  And yes, all these products are available at drastically low prices; but again, it does not carry any guarantee or warranty.

Lot of other things to know there. Here’s the secret of Manish Market. Manish Market (the building) itself is a retail market. The actual wholesale market is behind the building where dealers sit in open space or in a store made of thick plastic, the temporary stores. They just have a table and a wireless landline phone or a cell phone for communicating with other dealers. They have a common godown, where all the dealers store their products.
